Job Description

Your experience as a Lead Systems Engineer, with knowledge of tactical communications and information systems and an ability to lead and a technical team in the Defence sector can immediately have a positive impact to my industry-leading client as they enter a new phase in their development.

This role is for a Lead Internal Research and Development Engineer to provide technical leadership and governance of the Future Land Environment Internal Research and Development (IRAD) portfolio. The successful candidate will contribute to and lead tasks at different stages in the engineering lifecycle. Tasks assigned will be varied and include analysing and defining customer requirements, architectural design, system and product development, system integration, verification and customer demonstrations.

technically strong in this Tactical Communications and Information Systems (TacCIS) domain, with sound judgement and comfortable with abstract thinking. Highly proficient communication skills are required both internally and with customers and end users.

About the Job

Work with the external and internal stakeholders to clarify outcomes & requirements and agree designs/solutions to satisfy those requirements. Solutions may take the form of Systems, Products (software & hardware) and Services.
Undertake analysis of design changes to confirm feasibility
Co-creation of solutions to meet stakeholder needs, working in collaboration with Customers and 3rd parties.
Co-creation of business cases to secure IRAD funding, working in collaboration with Business Development and Programme Management.
Accurate and timely reporting of progress and escalation of issues to Programme and Engineering management.
Responsible for time management of self and team ensuring work outputs delivered to agreed schedule
Present and demonstrate aspects of solutions to relevant stakeholders to gain feedback on the development activities and support future improvements.
Work with specialist and support engineering groups (including security, safety, ILS, human factors) as required to validate designs
Oversee and contribute to integration and testing activities on prototype solutions to validate designs and ensure compliance with requirements.
Assumes cost and schedule responsibility for a cost account/work package of reasonable proportions.
Manages a group of technical experts. Assigns and outlines work to direct reporting.
Perform performance appraisals.
Participates in job interviews for more junior personnel. May also participate in interviewing at job fairs and for co-ops.

Experience required

Essential Skills and Abilities:
Breadth of experience in a role that demonstrates technical leadership and application of system engineering skills with a track record of delivery.
Demonstrates understanding of the system engineering lifecycle and phases, and challenges associated with system engineering in a delivery focussed, commercially successful organisation.
Experienced in engineering methods and tools for elaborating system requirements.
Experience in Service Based Design and Delivery
Experience in software engineering and development methodologies e.g. Agile
Experienced in engineering methods and tools for system modelling (SysML)
Confident and effective dealing with Customers, End Users and external 3rd Parties.
Good written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills as well as motivation, integrity, professionalism, flexibility, commitment and innovation
Hold or be capable of holding security clearance
Familiar with tactical network infrastructures including networks, radios and system management considerations.
Good understanding of messaging and routing protocols, TCP/IP, UDP, including those applicable to wireless (as well as wired) environments
Knowledge of security processes and controls for secure military systems

Defence/aerospace industry background
Experience/knowledge of MoD Defence as a Platform (DaaP)
Experienced in the use of the following engineering tools: DOORS, Artisan Studio, IBM Rational Rhapsody, HP Quality Centre
Good understanding in, and application of, Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL)
