My client, a world leader in the defence sector, requires a Laser Image Processing & Control Systems Engineer to join their team in Bristol, working on technology aspects of the defence sector's future vision for a laser effector, specifically imaging through atmospheric turbulence for missile systems. You will be part of a very diverse team of highly motivated scientists and engineers, who are genuinely interested in their fields of expertise.

Laser Image Processing & Control Systems Engineer - Bristol.

The Laser Image Processing & Control Systems Engineer will oversee an optics laboratory for the design, development and testing of imaging and control for precision laser pointing in the presence of atmospheric turbulence. You will conduct research on new optical and image processing techniques for laser pointing and tracking, assisting in the evaluation of demonstrators through off-site trials in the UK and overseas and undertaking simulation work to support laboratory and outdoor trials results. The role will develop a research strategy in image processing and control and will be at the forefront of science and engineering for laser directed energy.

This role offers interesting and exciting work, working on some truly innovative and world-class technology, with opportunity to manage projects through their full lifecycle, from the laboratory to customer delivery.

To be considered for this role, applicants will be qualified to degree level (or higher) in a physical sciences or engineering discipline, with industry experience and knowledge/laboratory skills using lasers, optics and imaging. You will be creative and imaginative with the ability to innovate.

You will have:
Knowledge of systems engineering concepts and model-based system engineering (MBSE).
Knowledge of the physics of atmospheric turbulence, and current state of the art compensation techniques.
Ability to automate and control test and measurement equipment for data capture (such as LabView).
Ability to use well-known computer simulation codes to carry out optical simulations (such as Matlab, Zemax).
Ability to write computer code to examine large datasets (such as Matlab or Python).

You will have a record of successful technical work delivered individually and/or as part of a team and the ability to work with minimal supervision and often from a blank sheet of paper. As such, you will need excellent verbal and written communication skills, backed by working knowledge of Office software.
