Press Tool Fitter


Work as part of the press tool unit assembly team.
To fit, assemble, and test tools and tool units and all associated parts and assemblies.
Ensure that all parts and assemblies are correctly fitted and assembled together in accordance with the agreed tolerances and procedures.
Build new tool unit assemblies and repair and refurbish existing tool units.
Carry out testing of the tool units in accordance with agreed procedures.
To assist with the building or repair of complete press assemblies when required.
Carry out routine maintenance and unplanned service work as and when required including out-of-hours breakdowns.
Mechanical assembly of tool units
The role consists of building new units and refurbishment of used units to as new condition. The fitter performing this task builds and tests the complete unit from start to finish. Typically, a unit will take around one week to complete, although this does vary depending on the type.
All components for the units are pre-manufactured prior to the start of the build. On units being refurbished a certain amount of rework of existing parts may be required.
Although a high standard of mechanical assembly/fitting skills are required, part of the build requires machining skills including surface grinding, turning and milling all to close tolerances.

A typical tool unit build comprises of the following main activities.
Honing.Surface grinding.
Setting of punches and dies.Building and setting of forming assembly.
Building and setting of ejection systems (mechanical and air).
Achieving critical dimensions via machining.
Functional testing at operational speeds.
Fault finding and rectification.
