Job Description

Our client is a world leader in the provision of high-technology products such as power converters, high power electric motors, control solutions, signature management systems, underwater measurement ranges and high integrity sensors for a wide range of defence and subsea applications.

They are looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to be based out of their site in Staffordshire.

The Senior Mechanical Engineer role requires a high degree of customer interaction to align company strategy to that of customers. The jobholder will provide mechanical design expertise in support of business opportunities, including feasibility studies, technology developments, concept designs for new products and bids and proposals.

You will also provide guidance and support to other Mechanical Engineers and contribute towards the development of engineering excellence within the business.

Key responsibilities include:
*Generation of concept design proposals and feasibility studies to support product development programmes.
*Management and Co-ordination of technical activities within a small team.
*Carrying out elements of the product design.
*Responsibility for structural and thermal performance of products.
*Guidance and support to other mechanical engineers.
*Acting as Design Review Authority for mechanical aspects of projects.
*Provision of mechanical engineering expertise in support of future business opportunities.

To be considered for this role, applicants will need to be qualified to degree level or higher in Mechanical Engineering with experience of Power Electronics and Inverter Systems. You will have a broad knowledge of all aspects of engineering (e.g. systems, electrical, electro-mechanical) and an appreciation of electrical aspects of cabinet design (e.g. EMC, stray fields, creepage and clearance, insulation systems), as well as experience in manufacturing methods applicable to electronic cabinets (sheet metal fabrications, welding, machining, corrosion protection etc.).

You will need to be proficient in the use of 3D CAD (Solidworks is preferred but not essential) and the use of CFD/FEA tools for thermal analysis and structural analysis, fatigue life assessments. You will have good knowledge of materials and of best practice design lifecycle process (e.g. gated design phases, design reviews etc.).
