Submarine Safety and Assurance Consultant Defence consultancy

An established defence consultancy is expanding its submarine safety and assurance capability to support complex, high-hazard programmes within the Defence Nuclear Enterprise. This role sits within a specialist safety function delivering technically rigorous safety and assurance outputs across submarine platforms and related systems.

You will play a key role in the development, authoring and assurance of submarine safety cases and supporting safety artefacts. This includes leading and contributing to structured hazard identification and risk analysis activities, applying recognised techniques such as HAZID, HAZOP, FMECA, FTA and related methods. The work requires detailed understanding of defence nuclear safety regulation, assurance frameworks and Naval Authority expectations, alongside confident engagement with regulators, independent assurance bodies and senior technical stakeholders.

This position is suited to an experienced defence nuclear or submarine safety professional who wants to deepen their technical impact within a consultancy environment. The team supports progression from military or government backgrounds, offering structured mentoring, consultancy skills development and exposure to technically demanding client work.

Key responsibilities
• Authoring, reviewing and assuring submarine safety cases and safety justifications
• Planning and facilitating hazard identification, risk assessment and safety workshops
• Applying defence nuclear safety regulations, standards and Naval Authority processes
• Providing independent technical challenge and assurance to client delivery teams
• Managing and delivering complex technical work packages, often in parallel
• Engaging directly with regulators, assurance authorities and senior client stakeholders

About you
• Strong experience within the Defence Nuclear Enterprise, ideally submarine focused
• Proven safety case authorship and ownership of safety artefacts
• Hands-on experience applying formal hazard and risk analysis techniques
• Detailed knowledge of defence nuclear safety governance and assurance
• Confident operating in a client-facing consultancy environment
• Highly organised, professional and comfortable managing your own technical workload

Working pattern and location
Hybrid working, with regular attendance at offices near Bristol, Cardiff, Falmouth, Liverpool, Plymouth and Portsmouth, plus client sites.

Security
You must be eligible to obtain UK Security Clearance.
